LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team (9-9, 3-7 SEC) fell 4-0 to No. 2 Texas A&M on Friday at the Boone Tennis Center. The Aggies are coming off a NCAA National Championship last spring, leaving the Wildcats’ hands full and ultimately coming up short.
Kentucky put up a good fight to start the match with doubles, however Texas A&M showed their ability to win long rallies. Junior Ellie Myers and sophomore Julia Zhu were defeated by the Aggie’s Lexington Reed and Nicole Khirin 6-2, and Lucciana Perez and Mary Stoiana defeated No. 65 pair of fifth-year Lizzy Stevens and senior Ellie Eades to clinch the doubles point for Texas A&M. Junior Zoe Hammond and freshman Asuncion Jadue had an unfinished match on court two.
Moving onto singles play, the Wildcats put up another contested battle. On court six, Myers was defeated by Reed 6-2, 6-3 to put the Aggies up 2-0. Texas A&M went on to win two more points to clinch the match 4-0 against freshman Tess Bucher (6-3, 6-2) and Hammond 6-4, 6-3. Zhu attempted a comeback by pushing a third set on court two, but her match went unfinished (4-6, 6-2, 2-2). Stevens took the first set on court three from Kupres (6-4, 4-6), but her court also did not finish the third and deciding set.
The Wildcats, now 9-9, will have a chance to bounce back home on Sunday at 12 p.m. against No. 15 Texas, which will bring a challenge once again. Admission is free for all fans that wish to attend, and live stats can be found here.
