The Grand Slam Down Under is now in its second week in Melbourne, with the quarter-finals starting and the energy courtside and among in-person visitors reaching an all-time high. It’s truly a sight to behold.
In the women’s singles, world No. 4 Coco Gauff has been calm, cool, and collected since her major win at the 2023 U.S. Open. She has yet to drop a set and is set to play Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-finals today, setting a record with her quick victories.
Joining Gauff in the quarters is defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, who is also undefeated so far. Sabalenka is facing No. 9 seed Barbora Krejčíková today, as she aims to retain her title. However, No. 1 seed Iga Świątek suffered a surprising loss to Czech teenager Linda Nosková, making it her earliest exit from a tournament since 1979.
On the men’s side, Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime was eliminated in the third round, leaving North America’s hopes resting on No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz. Fritz scored an impressive win against No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas and will now face the formidable opponent No. 1 Novak Djokovic in his first-ever tourney quarter-final. It’s definitely a tough match-up.
Djokovic, aiming for his 25th Grand Slam singles title, will be making his 58th quarter-final appearance at a major tournament tomorrow. His dominance on the court is truly exceptional.
