The FIA World Rallycross Championship’s ‘Battle of Technologies’ has landed in Belgium for the World RX of Benelux (17-18 August), featuring an exciting double-header race weekend between all-electric and sustainably-fuelled internal combustion engined cars at the Circuit Jules Tacheny in Mettet.
Johan Kristoffersson leads the championship as he aims for a seventh World RX title. Driving his sustainably-fuelled Volkswagen Polo KMS 601 RX, the Swede has won three out of four races this season, with a first corner collision with Kevin Hansen in Hungary being his only setback.
Kristoffersson is the only current World RX driver to have previously won at Mettet, back in 2017 on his way to his first world championship title.
His KMS – HORSE Powertrain team-mate Ole Christian Veiby is in second place in the overall standings and is eager to close the gap. The Norwegian has reached the podium at Mettet in the FIA European Rallycross Championship in 2015 and holds the record for the most podium finishes in World RX without a win.
Tied for third in the championship are CE Dealer Team by Volvo Construction Equipment drivers Niclas Grönholm and Klara Andersson. Grönholm won in Hungary in his PWR RX1e, the first electric power win of the season, with Andersson close behind on the podium in Nyirád.
Hansen World RX Team brothers Timmy and Kevin Hansen are in fifth and sixth place respectively. Timmy is a three-time podium finisher at Mettet, while Kevin had a dramatic crash in 2017. Both are looking for their first top three finish of the season.
The field is completed by René Münnich in his ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport SEAT Ibiza and Anthony Pelfrene in his JDM Raptor Racing Peugeot 208, both driving sustainably-fuelled combustion-powered cars.
World RX of Benelux also hosts the penultimate round of the 2024 FIA RX2e, Euro RX1, and Euro RX3 championships, led by Nils Andersson, Patrick O’Donovan, and Nils Volland.
Former Euro RX3 champion Kobe Pauwels is a ‘wild card’ entry in RX2e, making a return to rallycross after two years at his home track.
