Considering that it’s not launching a new lineup (we won’t be talking about SM11 until this time next year), it has been a busy start to the year for the Vokey team.

It’s barely the third week of January and Vokey has already added Low Bounce K Grind to the retail lineup and dropped an absolutely filthy (in the best possible way) Limited Edition Oil Can finish. To round out the month, Vokey is dropping its first WedgeWorks release of 2025, the A grind.

An evolving WedgeWorks

Wyndham Clark’s Favorite Lob Wedge Drops In WedgeWorks

Before we get to the details, let me give you some quick background.

Historically, Vokey has been somewhat unpredictable and entirely stingy with its WedgeWorks offerings. Don’t get me wrong. Surprises can be fun (64 W grind, anyone?) but if your go-to grind was a WedgeWorks-only option, you could never be sure when, or even if, a new version would find its way to the platform.

Simultaneously, Vokey advises replacing your higher-lofted wedges after 75 rounds. So what do you do when there’s no replacement for your preferred grind?

It’s a conundrum.

With that (and other things in mind), over the last year or so, Vokey has put more effort into making even its most niche grinds available through WedgeWorks while also adding new ones to the mix.

Granted, I have an unnatural fascination with wedges but I’m loving every bit of this new approach (except the part where nothing comes in Slate Blue (aka The Best Finish™).

That brings us to today and the release of the WedgeWorks A grind.

It’s been a little over a year since the SM9 A grind hit WedgeWorks and, while the timing suggests acceleration, as I said, it’s about making grinds available to golfers sooner rather than later, though there is, unfortunately, a cadence that has to be observed. If you put everything out all at once, it doesn’t leave you with much to work with for the final 23 months of a two-year release cycle.

Vokey Wedge Works A Grind

About the Vokey A grind

First, it’s important to mention that this WedgeWorks A grind release isn’t much different than the last. The pertinent detail is the 2023 release was built of SM9 technology while this one is the SM10 version of the same grind.

That grind – the A – is based on Vokey’s L grind.  It was created for Geoff Ogilvy who played the L but wanted something that moved a little faster through the turf.

To create the A grind, Vokey removes the ribbon – the relieved area in the transition between the widest part of the sole and the trailing edge. The ribbon is the central portion of the L grind highlighted below.

The result is a wedge that sits closer to the ground in the square position and moves through the turf with less resistance.

My read on the A grind is that it’s going to be a little less versatile than the L but, with a functionally wider sole, it’s a little more forgiving (less prone to digging), too.

Among Vokey’s low-bounce lob wedge offerings, the L grind (four degrees of bounce) sits between the extremely versatile (but sometimes punishing) T and the extremely forgiving, wide-sole, low-bounce K.

The ribbon-less A should play a bit more like a wide-sole wedge. I’m inclined to say that the A sits between L and the Low Bounce K on the versatility to forgiveness continuum.

A versus A+ grind

Vokey A grind and A+ Grind Wedges

It’s reasonable to assume some of you may be wondering how the A differs from the A+ released last year. Simply, the “+” indicates the A+ has a wider sole and more bounce.

Vokey A grind on Tour

The A grind has become a popular option for players looking for a low-bounce lob wedge that produces a higher trajectory than Vokey’s other offerings.

Wyndham Clark moves between a 58A and a 60A (both bent to 59) depending on course conditions (the 58 will play as higher bounce, the 60 as lower).  Tom Kim has multiple wins with an A grind and former Titleist staffer, Max Homa, has used an A as well.

Vokey Wedge Works A Grind vs. L Grind and low bounce K.
