Yasiel Puig, former right-fielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is making a return to the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), the highest level of baseball in South Korea. Puig recently announced that he will be playing for the Kiwoom Heroes in the 2025 season, after previously playing for the team in 2022.
“Thank you HEROES I am so honored and happy to go back. This 2025 we get the [trophy],” Puig shared on social media.
Puig started his professional career with the Dodgers in 2013 after signing a seven-year, $42 million contract with the team. He made his MLB debut that year and went on to become an MLB All-Star in 2014, hitting .296 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs. Puig remained with the Dodgers until the 2018 season, after which he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. He also played for the Cleveland Guardians in 2019 before pursuing international play.
Since then, Puig has played in various leagues including the Dominican Professional Baseball League, the Mexican League, and most recently, the Venezuelan Winter League. He expressed gratitude towards his fans in Venezuela as he announced his departure from the country’s winter league.
Due to contractual obligations for the 2025 season, Puig’s new team has asked him to retire from playing this winter to prepare for the upcoming season.
During his previous stint with the Heroes in the KBO, Puig helped the team reach the Korea Series, where they ultimately lost to the SSG Landers.
