Planning to escape the cold, wet, and damaged roads of the UK for warmer climates, smoother roads, longer trails, and an overall more pleasant cycling experience is a common desire for many cyclists. However, when it comes to travelling with your bike, dealing with baggage handlers who may not handle oversized luggage or bikes with the utmost care can be a concern. In this article, we explore the types of bike boxes that are approved for use with Yellow Jersey bicycle insurance policies.
At Yellow Jersey, we offer coverage for your bicycle while it is in the hands of an airline. Our insurance is designed to protect against damage and loss during travel. Additionally, our Ultimate insurance includes coverage for damage to the bike box itself.
To ensure your bicycle is insured, our policy specifies that the bike must be stored in a bike box made of plastic, carbon fibre, or metal.
According to our policy wording, a bike box is defined as:
If your box meets our policy description, it is covered. Our Ultimate insurance even provides free bike box cover up to £1000 for damaged boxes. Make sure to retain your receipt or hire ticket to prove ownership of the box.

We recognize that bike boxes can be expensive, but there are some alternative options available. While our policy does not cover bike bags, we do have a list of approved bags that use an internal metal mounting structure. The main distinction is that we only cover damage to the bike, not the bag itself:
-Thule Round Trip – 3204662
-Evoc Road Bike Bag Pro – 100409100
-Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 ROAD BIKE TRAVEL BAG
-Scicon Aerocomfort MTB BIKE TRAVEL BAG – MY19
-Scicon Aerocomfort 2.0
-Scicon AeroComfort Plus
If your bike bag is not on this list, it will not be covered for damage. Bicycles in soft bike bags or cardboard boxes are not insurable. Remember, damage to a bike bag is not covered, regardless of its inclusion on our list.
When travelling, it’s normal for your luggage to experience minor scrapes and scuffs. However, Yellow Jersey bicycle insurance, like any other policy, does not cover superficial damage to your bike box. In the case of significant structural damage, our Ultimate insurance provides coverage for repair or replacement of the box up to £1000.
Some tips for travellers include:
-If you lack space for a bike box, consider renting one.
-Include an Airtag with the bike to aid in locating it in case it’s not loaded onto the plane.
-Upon arrival, inspect your bike box for any damage. Report any damages to the airline immediately.
-Consider upgrading to Yellow Jersey Ultimate insurance for free bike box coverage.
-Keep your pedals and shoes with your hand luggage to use in case of bike delays.
-If you need to disassemble your bike, mark key components for easier reassembly.
If you’re travelling abroad, in addition to bicycle insurance covering your bike and bike box, Yellow Jersey offers cycling travel insurance that includes emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, repatriation, and other benefits. This insurance can be purchased for single trips or annual multi-trip policies. For assistance, reach out to us at 0333 003 0046 or via email at support@yellowjersey.co.uk
