Piastri followed closely behind pole-sitter Leclerc at the start of the 51-lap race but managed to overtake him after the pit stops, creating a four-way battle for the lead with Perez and eventually Sainz joining the mix.
Piastri successfully defended his position at the front and extended his lead as Leclerc’s tires wore out towards the end, allowing Perez and Sainz to challenge him.
The race took a dramatic turn on the penultimate lap when Perez attempted to pass Leclerc, leading to a collision between Perez and Sainz, ending both of their races.
Despite the chaos, McLaren and Piastri celebrated their victory under the Virtual Safety Car, marking Piastri’s second Grand Prix win and putting McLaren at the top of the constructors’ championship.
Following Piastri and Leclerc, George Russell secured a podium finish in his Mercedes after the clash between Perez and Sainz, while Lando Norris passed Max Verstappen late in the race to finish fourth.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished in sixth place, benefiting from the incidents ahead, while Williams’ Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto scored valuable points for the team.
Lewis Hamilton managed to salvage a points finish for Mercedes after starting at the back of the grid due to engine issues, with Haas stand-in Ollie Bearman impressively finishing ahead of teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
Other notable finishes include Pierre Gasly in 12th place, followed by Daniel Ricciardo, Zhou Guanyu, and Esteban Ocon, who recovered from penalties.
Valtteri Bottas was the last finisher, with Perez, Sainz, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda retiring from the race after a collision on the first lap.
