MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite controlling a majority of the statistical categories, the Lee University women’s soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Christian Brothers University on Friday evening. The tie ended a three-game win streak for the Lady Flames and brought their overall record to 6-3-5, with a 6-1-3 standing in GSC action.
Lee remains in fourth place in the Gulf South Conference standings and is scheduled to face third place Union University on Sunday, November 3 at 2 PM in Jackson, Tenn.
Lee outshot CBU 19-6 throughout the game, but both teams managed four shots on goal. Abby Whitcomb made three saves in goal for Lee.
CBU scored first in the 59th minute when Alexa Franklin capitalized on a breakaway opportunity to beat Whitcomb in a one-on-one situation. However, the Lady Flames responded with increased pressure.
The equalizer came from Avery Sides in the 72nd minute with a powerful shot just outside the 18-yard box that bounced past the keeper. Lee had a chance to score a winning goal, but Grace Berry’s shot in the closing seconds went over the crossbar.
Berry had six shots in the game, while Addie Chapman had four. CBU received two yellow cards, while Lee did not receive any.
Coach Lee Hughes’ Thoughts:
“Disappointing result tonight. We created enough clear-cut chances to win the game, in the last few games those have been going in. We have to learn from tonight and keep growing like we have been doing all year.”
