The New Orleans Saints have responded to their disappointing 2-7 start to the season by parting ways with head coach Dennis Allen.
In a statement, Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed her gratitude for Allen’s contributions to the organization, calling him a highly respected football coach. However, she felt the decision to let him go was necessary at this time. Benson wished Allen and his family the best in their future endeavors.
The Saints began the season on a strong note, with impressive victories over the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys. However, as the season progressed, their performance declined, culminating in a seven-game losing streak. Allen faced challenges with numerous injuries to key players in the offense.
Despite the tough situation, Allen remained determined to keep fighting for the team’s success.
Calls for Allen’s dismissal had been growing among fans, and players also voiced concerns about the team’s performance.
After the loss to the Panthers, veteran defensive end Cameron Jordan expressed disappointment in a message to New Orleans fans.
Allen, who served as the Saints’ head coach for three seasons, had a successful tenure as defensive coordinator before his promotion. Although the defense remained strong under his leadership, the offense struggled, leading to a lackluster record and no playoff appearances during his time as head coach.
According to reports, special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi will take over as interim head coach for the Saints.
