Sabrina Ionescu is set to join her New York Liberty teammate Breanna Stewart in the Unrivaled Basketball League that Stewart co-founded. While participating in a behind-the-scenes shoot for the league’s inaugural season, Ionescu expressed her disappointment at missing out on being with ‘Stewie’.
Stewart, who led the Liberty to their first-ever WNBA title last season, shared a series of videos and photos on Instagram from their shoot with her Mist Basketball Club team. She captioned it: “BTS vibes are misty 🏔️🥶❄️”
Reacting to Stewart’s post, Ionescu, who formed a formidable partnership with her during their championship victory, playfully commented: “Why didn’t I see you ugh.”
Ionescu was chosen as the final wild card selection for Unrivaled and will be part of the Phantom Basketball Club team. She will play alongside players like Jackie Young, Marina Mabry, Satou Sabally, Tiffany Hayes, and Brittney Griner under the coaching of Adam Harrington.
The Phantom and Mist basketball clubs are among the six competing teams in the 3-on-3 Unrivaled Basketball League, which is scheduled to begin on Jan. 17 in Miami and run until March 17.
Co-founded by Stewart and Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, the league aims to provide a lucrative platform for women’s professional players during the WNBA offseason.
Sabrina Ionescu’s Consideration Before Joining Unrivaled
In a recent article published on Dec. 23 by the Associated Press, Sabrina Ionescu shared her decision-making process before agreeing to play in the newly formed 3-on-3 Unrivaled Basketball League. She emphasized the importance of weighing her options and choosing what’s best for her career.
Ionescu stated: “It was a huge decision for me to play in the league. I carefully evaluated all my options and decided to participate in a league that is groundbreaking and offers ownership opportunities.”
She also mentioned that the flexibility provided by Unrivaled to miss some games throughout the tournament influenced her decision. Ionescu had an impressive WNBA season last year, culminating in winning her first league title with the New York Liberty.
