The Dallas Wings have recently brought on head coach Chris Koclanes to lead the team into a new era.
He addressed the media on Thursday at an introductory press conference just before Wings star Satou Sabally announced her decision not to return to the team next season. The Wings are expected to label Sabally as a “core” player to facilitate a potential trade during the upcoming free agency period starting on Saturday.
Replacing the WNBA’s Most Improved Player and 2023 All-Star, who was plagued by injuries last season, will be Koclanes’ initial challenge.

With over a decade of experience coaching in the WNBA and Division I women’s basketball, Koclanes most recently served as a USC assistant coach. His defensive acumen and success in player development, coupled with his past work alongside new Wings general manager Curt Miller, have earned him high regard.
Here are five key points Koclanes highlighted during Thursday’s press conference:
1. Dallas was an attractive destination
The Wings’ upcoming new arena and practice facility, coupled with the 2025 WNBA draft’s top pick, make Dallas an enticing prospect. The organization’s record season-ticket sales and strong roster and front office were key factors in Koclanes’ decision to join the team.

2. Thrilled to have the No. 1 draft pick
The buzz surrounding the possibility of drafting UConn standout Paige Bueckers with the top pick has energized the Wings. Koclanes emphasized the excitement within the organization and plans to leverage that momentum heading into training camp.

3. Bringing defense back to Dallas
Following a challenging 2024 season, characterized by a disappointing 9-31 record and missing the playoffs, Koclanes aims to strengthen the Wings’ defensive capabilities. He stressed the importance of organizational commitment to defensive play and the need for consistency and effort on that end of the court.
Koclanes and the Wings’ management will explore options in free agency to bolster the team’s defense, prioritizing high basketball IQ players.
4. Excited about the future of women’s basketball
Koclanes commended the current surge in popularity and interest in women’s basketball, citing record viewership numbers in the WNBA and NCAA. He highlighted the impact of standout players like Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers in elevating the sport’s profile and attracting increased attention.
5. Building a strong culture
While winning is the main goal, Koclanes emphasized the importance of establishing a solid foundation and positive team culture. He aims to lead by example and prioritize player development to create a cohesive and successful team environment.
Focusing on these details, according to Koclanes, will ultimately lead to on-court success.
