CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini women’s basketball sophomore Irene Noya Catoira has been named to Spain’s roster for the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup. Action will take place from July 12-20 in Brno, Czechia (Czech Republic).
Noya Catoira is a 6-3 forward who hails from Vilagarcía de Arousa, Pontevedra, Spain. The rising sophomore attended Institut Joaquim Blume.
Noya Catoira also represented Spain at the age of 15 in the Ciudad de Toledo International Tournament and helped the team to a runner-up finish at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 U17 Europe Cup following a second-place finish at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 U17 Europe Cup Qualifier. She also played for Segle XXI in the Spain-LF2 league from 2022-24, helping the team win the Group B regular season championship both seasons.
In total, 14 players were called up for the Spain women’s U19 team’s summer action. Mini-camp ran from May 18-21 and was followed by the first round of cuts. The team then played in the Utebo (June 27-29) and Portugal (July 4-6) Tournaments, followed by a second round of cuts. Noya Catoira is one of seven NCAA Division I student-athletes on the roster.
In the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup, Spain is in Group D alongside host Czechia, Japan, and Argentina. A total of 16 teams qualified for the event.
