The Indiana Fever’s recent surge of optimism has been suddenly replaced by heartbreak. After stringing together five consecutive wins and looking poised to make a strong push for the postseason, the team has been dealt a devastating setback.
In a crushing announcement, the Fever revealed that guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald will both miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season. Here’s the latest update on the situation.
How Long Are Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald Sidelined for?
The Fever’s injury nightmare has gone from bad to worse. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou broke the news on X, writing: “Breaking: Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season, the Indiana Fever announces. Colson suffered an ACL tear and McDonald broke a bone in her foot. Devastating news for the Fever.”

Both injuries occurred during the Fever’s crushing 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Colson went down with a knee injury in the first quarter, which was later diagnosed as an ACL tear. Meanwhile, McDonald exited in the fourth quarter when she suffered a broken bone in her right foot.
McDonald’s arrival in Indiana was meant to stabilize the guard rotation during Clark’s absence. Initially signed to a hardship contract, she earned a full-season deal after the team waived DeWanna Bonner.
The former No. 3 overall pick had quickly become a vital contributor, averaging 9.8 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game — all career highs. Her 42.9% shooting from the field made her one of the Fever’s most reliable playmakers this season.
Colson, meanwhile, brought veteran leadership and energy off the bench. Appearing in 30 of the team’s 31 games, she averaged 2.4 points and two assists per game, serving as an important stabilizing presence in a young and evolving roster. Her loss will be felt both on and off the court.
What Next for Fever Amid Guard Rotation in Crisis?
With Colson and McDonald out for the season and Clark still sidelined, the Fever’s backcourt depth chart is suddenly alarmingly shallow. Kelsey Mitchell, Sophie Cunningham, and Lexie Hull are now the only healthy guards available.
It’s almost certain that the team will seek immediate reinforcements, likely through another hardship exception signing, just to remain competitive in the final stretch of the season.
Clark, who has been vocal in her support for her teammates, took to Instagram to send a heartfelt message. Reposting the Fever’s announcement, she wrote: “Love you guys 🖤”. It was a small but emotional gesture that reflected the bond within the team, even as injuries threaten to derail their momentum.

For the Fever, the challenge ahead is daunting. They must now navigate the toughest part of their season without three of their most important guards. While Clark’s return may bring some relief, the road to the playoffs just became far more treacherous.
