Video and audio footage of JJ Redick calling out Austin Reaves during Friday’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks went viral. After being eliminated in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs last season, the Lakers appear to be a different team and currently hold an impressive record of 14-4.
The Lakers’ most recent win came in their home game against the Mavericks. This was a highly anticipated matchup, as Anthony Davis was expected to make his return. While the Lakers emerged victorious, footage of Redick and Reaves drew considerable attention for another reason.
JJ Redick Yells at Austin Reaves for Pausing His Play for the Lakers To Interact With Kyrie Irving
Moments like these often unfold during the course of a game and can go unnoticed by fans. Interactions between players on the court and those on the sidelines are relatively common, so it was not surprising that Reaves chose to engage in a brief exchange with Irving.
Head coach JJ Redick, however, appeared to take issue with the interaction, which was understandable given that the game was in its closing stages. Although the Lakers held a double‑digit lead and were all but assured of victory — circumstances that may have contributed to Reaves’ lapse in focus — Redick was heard repeatedly calling out “AR” in an effort to redirect his guard’s attention to the game

Reaves quickly realized he had been distracted and rushed back into action, creating an amusing moment between the coach and player. Thankfully for the Lakers, this interaction did not change the outcome of their game against the Mavericks.
While much of the focus this season is on stars such as Luka Dončić and LeBron James, Reaves has consistently proven himself to be a reliable scorer for the Lakers.
In their win against the Mavericks, Reaves recorded a game-high 38 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, surpassing Dončić’s 35-point performance to lead his team to victory.
In any case, it is clear that the Lakers are one of the best teams in the league and have a talented core. With Reaves and Dončić in the backcourt, there is no denying that the Lakers can compete with any top-tier team.
If Reaves, Dončić, James, and the other stars on the Lakers adapt to their roles, winning an NBA title this season is certainly not out of the question.
