Glasgow City will go into the winter break on top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) after a 7-0 win at Petershill Park over Hamilton Academical.

In characteristically miserable Scottish weather, the teams at the top and bottom of the SWPL table faced off in a decidedly one-sided affair. Hamilton were seeking their first points of the league campaign, but will head into the holidays in the relegation spot.

Meanwhile, 16-time champions City boast a seven-point lead over Celtic at the top of the tree.

Starting XIs

Glasgow City

Gibson (C); Muir; Golob; Forrest; Wróbel; Whelan; Anderson; Kozlova; Tanaka; Brownlie; Boyes.

Hamilton Academical

Paton; Cowan; Campbell; Love; MacDonald; McIntosh (C); Gibb; Barclay; Docherty; Reid; Giard.

Dominant City bolstered by Forrest brace

The gulf between SWPL teams is often a point of criticism in the league. Never was it clearer than in the opening minutes of Glasgow City’s clash with Hamilton.

A third-minute foul in the Accies box led to a penalty, converted by City’s Lisa Forrest. After 12 minutes, the hosts held 85 percent possession and clearly displayed the benefits of a full-time set up.

In the 15th minute, the relentless press of City paid off, with Forrest getting her second goal. Yet, despite a dominant first half, the home side will be frustrated by the lack of quality in front of goal. In a league where goal difference has decided the winner as recently as 2024, capitalising on opportunities to rack up the score is essential.

In truth, City could have wrapped up the game heading into half-time, having taken 14 shots to Accies’ zero. Instead, they settled for just two goals to nil.

Goal flurry sees Glasgow City stay top of the table

The second half opened with a slower pace, although the hosts still looked to be the more dangerous side. Hamilton showed a little fight, with Melissa Reid carving out space in front of the box, but Josephine Giard couldn’t make good on her cross.

In the 71st minute, the ball fell favourably to Louisa Boyes, whose chip sent it just out of reach of Abigail Paton in goal — 3-0 City.

With the wind in their sails, The Original Trailblazers kept the pressure on. In the 75th minute, a Forrest header made it 4-0. Then again, in the 80th, Forrest completed her haul to put City 5-0 up. Or so we thought. Right on time in the 85th, Forrest netted another.

Not to be outdone, second half substitute and Scotland international Abi Harrison’s 92nd minute strike rounded out the City goals in the last play of the game. Final score, 7-0.

🤩 “It’s all down to my team-mates. I wouldn’t be able to score the goals without them.”

The SWPL title race continues

For Hamilton, their quest to avoid relegation goes on. The three points see Glasgow City go into the winter break at the top of the table regardless of the result next week. Yet, if the side are to lift their 17th league title, they’ll have to see off challenges from Hearts, Celtic, Rangers, and defending champions Hibs. Ten points currently separate the league leaders from fifth place.
