A phone call changed everything. One of the best women’s basketball players of all time just found out she’s going to the Hall of Fame, and she couldn’t stop breaking down. Not because of trophies or records, but because she knew she belonged with the greats who inspired her.

Candace Parker is the newest member of the Class of 2026 at the historic Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Her agent told her she was eligible. Parker talked about how emotional the news was for her.

“Zach Miller, my agent, hit me and kind of just told me when they were going to be announcing. And so that was kind of the first on the radar. I found out that the other eligible Hall of Famers for 2026, Elena Delle Donne, Blake Griffin, Jamal Crawford, Bruce Pearl, Joe Johnson, Kelvin Sampson, and the 96 USA basketball women’s national team, are some of the other first-time nominees. And so to be in a class with people that I really have kind of measured my game up against and have been going through the grind alongside. I have so many connections to so many people in this class. I got emotional. I didn’t think I would,” Candace Parker said.

When you think about what Parker has done, her tears make sense. She was the first overall pick in 2008 and won WNBA championships with three different teams, which no one else has done. She has been named an All-Star seven times, an MVP twice, and a Finals MVP. Parker feels like her whole career has been validated now that she is being honored with legends like Elena Delle Donne and Blake Griffin. Finally, all the things she gave up for basketball are paying off.

The most important thing to Parker about her nomination was its historical significance.

“I don’t think you ever set out to like get an orange jacket. Like that’s not your whole point. But as you get older, you realize what comes with that and all the people that you idolize… I’ve given so much to the game and have it. And so it’s a special club,” Parker reflected.

Parker, who will turn 40 in 2026, said it felt strange to be honored after retiring in 2024 after a legendary career that included winning back-to-back national championships at Tennessee in 2007 and 2008.

The Hall of Fame doesn’t just honor stats. It honors people who changed the sport for good. John L. Doleva, president of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, said, “This year’s ballot recognizes those whose legacy continues to shape how the game is played, coached, and celebrated.” On April 4, during Final Four Weekend, the Class of 2026 will be announced. This will show how much these athletes have changed the sport around the world.

Earlier this year, Parker’s jerseys at both the LA Sparks and the Chicago Sky were retired.

Parker has had a legendary career both on and off the court.

A look at Candace Parker’s historic career

Candace Parker has earned a lot of respect for her work as a WNBA player and as an analyst of NBA superstars. She proved herself in the biggest rooms by working with Shaq, Barkley, and Kenny Smith.

Parker has served as an analyst for NBA on TNT since 2018. She made history by becoming the first female color commentator. She also made history by being the only woman analyst for Amazon Prime among NBA stars like Wade and Nowitzki. She showed that women can talk about men’s games. Parker is going to the Hall of Fame in her 40s.

Parker has played for over a decade. Out of the 410 games she has played, she has a field goal percentage of 47.9% and a free-throw success rate of 76.7%. In 2008, she became the first player to win both the WNBA Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. She is also the first female to dunk in a WNBA game. Parker led the Los Angeles Sparks, the Chicago Sky, and the Las Vegas Aces to win the WNBA Championship. She is the first and only player to lead three different franchises to the WNBA Championship. In college, she has won the national championship for Tennessee in 2007 and 2008. Both years, she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

Parker’s journey from WNBA champion to a respected NBA voice shows that anyone can be a great basketball analyst.
