Johnny Tapia’s Sons Win Their Pro Debuts In Albuquerque

By Boxing Bob Newman

Tapia promotions, headed by the widow of the late legend Johnny Tapia, put on Tapia Takeover – Burque Brawl Friday night in Albuquerque, NM. The seven bout card featured the pro debuts of her son’s Johnny and Nicco Tapia.

In the main event, local heavyweight Cody East put a beat down on KeShawn Jackson. Three knockdowns in the third forced referee David Rios to wave it off. East moves to 7-1, 5 KOs. Jackson plummets to 1-9.

The co-main event pitted bare knuckle veteran and Albuquerque’s own Felipe Chavez against MMA veteran and Nova Scotia native John Makdessi in a super middleweight clash. After an uneventful first round, Makdessi landed a thunderous overhand right in the second that dropped Chavez on his back, referee Sid Ware foregoing the count and waving it off immediately. Makdessi wins his pro boxing debut at 1-0, 1 KO. Chavez loses his pro boxing debut at 0-1.

Super middleweight Nicco Tapia made his pro debut against tough-as-nails Andres Parra in a hard-fought four-rounder. Tapia dropped Parra in the first round when the ropes kept Parra up. What looked like another early ending ended up being the first fight of the night to not only see the second round, but to go the distance. Tapia dominated But could not put Parra away. He won by scores of 40-35 across the board, starting out at 1-0. Parra is now 0-2.

In a super bantamweight clash, Yoruba Emilio Moreu II put Jonah Cahill down for the count with a right to the body. Referee Sid Ware reached the count of 10 at 1:34 of the opening stanza. Moreu II improves to 3-0, 3 KOs. Cahill drops to 1-4, 1 KO.

The first Tapia son to make his pro debut was Johnny Lee Tapia. He took on Leon Miles in a scheduled four-round super welterweight bout. The much taller Tapia felt out Miles for about a minute. Miles hit the deck under duress but referee David Rios ruled it a slip. Moments later, Miles was down for good, courtesy of a Tapia left to the pit of his stomach. Referee Rios waved matters off at 1:56 of the opening session.
Johnny Lee said he wanted to make his father and mother proud as he starts out 1-0, 1 KO. Miles starts out at 0-1.

Heavyweight Nicholas Joseph dropped Samuel Jones, Jr. twice in the first round, forcing referee Sid Ware’s stoppage. Joseph moves to 2-1, 1 KO, while Jones, Jr. starts out at 0-1.

Opening the show was super middleweight Jaiden Gappy who blasted out Loren Higgs in the first round. Referee David Rios waved matters off at 1:01 of the opening session, where Higgs remained on the canvas for several minutes under the attention of the ringside physicians. He was able to leave the ring under his own power. Gappy begins his pro career at 1-0, 1 KO, while Higgs starts out at 0-1.
