SI’s Connor Orr singled out Tampa Bay’s outside linebacker Yaya Diaby as the most underrated player. Here’s what Orr had to say about the second-year edge rusher.
“During Diaby’s rookie season, there was a standout play where he displayed his strength by bench-pressing Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell on a run play and then making the tackle. Diaby made several impactful tackles last year and demonstrated the physicality to break through multiple blockers. Another notable tackle for loss against the Tennessee Titans showcased Diaby’s ability to read plays and anticipate moves, positioning himself for successful tackles.
“With 7.5 sacks and eight quarterback hits in his rookie year, Diaby impressed enough to earn a fifth-place finish in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting despite playing only 46% of the team’s defensive snaps. His potential seems promising and worthy of attention.”

Although local fans may not undervalue Yaya Diaby, he remains a hidden talent in the eyes of a national audience. Leading the team with 7.5 sacks, Diaby’s late start as a starter in Week 12 likely contributed to his under-the-radar status.
While Diaby made a splash in his rookie season, his performance dipped in Tampa Bay’s postseason games with limited tackles, hits, and sacks. However, this temporary setback is not cause for concern and is more likely a minor blip in his progress.
Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Diaby appears to be in top form. With diligent offseason training and preparation, he is poised to make a significant impact on the field. As a key figure in the outside linebacker rotation, Diaby’s increased playing time and early season start could lead to a breakout year, potentially earning him more national recognition.
