Sarina Wiegman was pleased with England securing a 2-0 win over Iceland at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground in their latest Women’s World Cup qualifier.

And she said that even though she would have liked a more decisive margin of victory, it was the result that was most important.

Wiegman described the result as “an important win” – with Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway getting the goals to secure the points.

“I think we played well,” the head coach went on. “We know they’re very disciplined, very powerful and really dangerous on the counter.

“For the most part, we took that out so they didn’t become dangerous. They had that one chance where Hannah Hampton did really well.”

She added: “Overall, we showed some good football.

“Of course, we want to score more goals but it starts with winning the game, and we created so many chances. If we’re so dominant, we’d like to score more goals.”

Lucy Bronze: England should have scored more

Lucy Bronze returned to the starting line-up and scored on the occasion of her 145th cap, and agreed with Wiegman that the Lionesses should have got more goals.

“We’ve got a good team connection,” the defender said immediately after the game.

“We probably should have scored a lot more goals but I think we’ve known in recent years that not conceding is more important than scoring as many as possible. We’ve had problems with that in the past few years in games that we shouldn’t have.

“To keep a clean sheet is important and to get the two goals.”
