It Will not come as a surprise to many given their fantastic rookie campaigns, but the Chicago Sky have a pair of WNBA All-Rookies!
Today the league announced that Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso were both named to the WNBA’s All-Rookie team. Reese was the 7th overall pick in the WNBA Draft and Cardoso was the 3rd overall selection. While Caitlin Clark was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year almost unanimously, Reese was the only other rookie to earn a first-place vote and finished runner-up.
Joining Reese and Cardoso on the All-Rookie team are Caitlin Clark (Fever), Rickea Jackson (Sparks), and Leonie Fiebich (Liberty).
Angel Reese & Kamilla Cardoso Receive All-Rookie Honors
Both players out of the SEC had strong rookie campaigns.
Reese made plenty of history in her first year in the WNBA. She set the all-time record for consecutive double-doubles, made the WNBA All-Star team (along with Clark) as a rookie, set the single-season WNBA rebounding record, and set the Sky’s single-season offensive-rebounding record.
She averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds over 34 games played. Unfortunately, however, her season ended a little early due to a wrist injury. The Chicago Sky would go on to fall out of the playoff picture in her absence.
Cardoso began the year with an injury that caused her to miss the first few games. She struggled to find her footing at first but slowly started to become the dominant force in the post the Sky hoped for when they drafted her. The South Carolina standout averaged 9.8 points and 7.9 rebounds over 32 games played. She also put up double-digit point totals in 11 of her last 14 games, as well as tallied six double-doubles in that span.
While the season might not have ended the way the Sky would have hoped after a promising start, this season proved they have two legitimate building blocks to work with going forward. Congrats to Angel and Kamilla!
