Since Opening Day, MLBTR has been periodically updating the upcoming free agent class. This is the third (and likely final) installment of our in-season power rankings. As players still have a month and potential postseason play to impact the rankings, the class is starting to take shape.
The top spots on the list have remained consistent from the start. This ranking aims to assess a player’s earning potential, with age playing a significant role. While this list is not just about talent, talent is a critical factor.
These power rankings are a collaborative effort, with contributions from Darragh McDonald and MLBTR founder Tim Dierkes. Players with opt-out clauses and player options are included. Statistics are current through August 29.
Juan Soto, OF, Yankees
Soto has been the standout free agent in this class for some time. He’s on pace for a record-breaking deal and is having one of his best seasons. With a career-high in home runs and strong offensive production, Soto is a top target for many teams. At just 26 years old, Soto’s prime years are ahead of him, making him an attractive option for any high-payroll team.
While not known for his defensive value, Soto has shown improvement in that area this season. His offensive prowess and strike zone awareness make him a valuable asset for any team. Turning down a significant extension offer in the past, Soto is poised for a huge payday in free agency.
