Buckie Ladies have clinched their third consecutive victory in the Highlands and Islands League Cup, triumphing over Sutherland in a closely contested final at George V Park in Golspie.
With over 300 spectators in attendance, the locals witnessed a thrilling moment when Sutherland skipper Bethany Sutherland scored a brilliant header into the far corner, only for it to be disallowed for offside, much to the delight of the Buckie fans. The match was intense, with Buckie captain Rebecca McMillan showcasing a strong defensive performance on the left flank, while Alena Gardner held the ball well up front. The midfield battle was fierce, with both teams fighting for control.
After a physical first half, Buckie’s Rheo Laurenson managed to break the deadlock with a fantastic finish past the Sutherland goalkeeper around the 35th minute. Despite Sutherland’s attempts to equalize, Buckie’s goalkeeper Sophia Golebiewski made crucial saves to maintain their lead. In the second half, Golebiewski’s outstanding performance helped Buckie secure the victory, as Sutherland struggled to find the net.
Following their cup triumph, both Buckie Ladies and Sutherland, along with league newcomers Ross County, are now locked in a tight title race in the ScottishPower Highlands and Islands league, with only two points separating the top three teams.
In the Barclays Scottish Women’s Championship, East Fife maintained their top spot despite a late equalizer from Glasgow Women, securing a valuable point. Glasgow Women had an early penalty claim denied in the first half, while East Fife managed to score early in the second half. Despite Glasgow’s goalkeeper Khym Ramsey making crucial saves, East Fife’s late equalizer from Kirstin Harper sealed the draw.
Other notable results from the league include Falkirk’s victory over Forfar Farmington, Stirling University’s win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and Renfrew’s triumph over Westdyke in a thrilling encounter.
St Mirren retained their lead in the Barclays Scottish Women’s League One by overcoming Giffnock, while other fixtures saw goal-filled matches with Queen of the South, Armadale, and Bonnyrigg Rose securing important wins.
