Bucs Assistant GM Receiving Second Interview With AFC Team

With the Bucs’ 2024 season now entering the rearview mirror, that means the team’s front office can now be purged at any time by other clubs with vacancies. After receiving an initial interview with the Titans, assistant general manager John Spytek will now be on to round two of interviews for their open general manager position, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The #Titans are bringing back several candidates for second round of interviews for their vacant GM job, among them: — #Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi— #Bucs assistant GM John Spytek— #Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham

There will be several others. A very good list so far.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 13, 2025

Rapoport’s colleague Tom Pelissero followed up with an update that Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds is also getting a second interview. Bills front office executive Terrance Gray is also expected to be on the team’s shortlist.

After the news broke less than a week ago that John Spytek would be getting an interview with the Titans, there is enough mutual interest to conduct another interview. Spytek has been in conversations with other teams regarding their openings in recent years, but this one could prove too good to pass up.

Armed with the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and enough salary cap space to make some moves after a 3-14 season that included six straight losses to end the year, Tennessee is in a position to rebuild its team in short order with the quarterback of their choosing from this year’s class, should they choose to move on from Will Levis.

Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward are the top two options at this point of draft conversation, and Spytek would have the choice to build out an NFL team his way if he accepted the job.

While it may not be the most attractive spot, only 32 of these positions are around the league. After what Spytek has done in recent years with the Bucs, there is no question that other teams have seen his growing resume after Tampa Bay has continually nailed its recent draft selections.

Losing him to another organization would be a tough blow as he has been vital to the team turning over its roster to make the postseason for five straight seasons. There is plenty of young talent on both sides of the football, and Spytek leading the scouting department has allowed the team to make the right calls.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht has been prepping the 44-year-old Spytek for this kind of opportunity for years, allowing him to speak about the draft before the media and hold press conferences of his own to give him that experience. Licht has known that Spytek would eventually become a general manager and could weather the storm of losing him because of the depth and talent of Tampa Bay’s front office.

He has two able directors of player personnel in Mike Biehl, who oversees college scouting, and Rob McCartney, who is in charge of pro scouting. Director of pro scouting Shane Scannell is also an up-and-comer in the Bucs’ front office.

Stay tuned to PewterReport.com for the latest news surrounding this and other updates as the offseason is now upon us. For more insight into the Bucs bracing for losing John Syptek and other personnel, Scott Reynolds recently discussed this on a Pewter Pulse you will want to check out.
