For the Charlo twins, Jermall and Jermell, the last five years have been a mix of headline-grabbing wins, tough setbacks, and questions about consistency at the elite level.

Now, Jermall has withdrawn from the May 2 co-main against Armando Reséndiz at T-Mobile Arena. “Just got word that Charlo is OUT of the fight with Reséndiz,” tweeted Andreas Hale. Jaime Munguía will step in, reshaping the card into a full Mexican showcase for Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Charlo Brothers Career Context

For the Charlo brothers, whose careers have been closely tracked over the past five years with multiple high-profile bouts, this absence marks another pause in an already uneven trajectory.

Between Jermall and his twin Jermell, the two have fought twice each in that span, producing headline-grabbing wins, tough setbacks, and lingering questions about consistency at the elite level.

Both have been in trouble with the law in recent years and there are serious question marks regarding both their futures in the sport.

Full Mexican Showcase

While fans had anticipated a U.S.-Mexico showdown, the reshuffled card now puts the spotlight squarely on Mexican talent, transforming what was expected to be a cross-border co-main into a full Mexican showcase for Cinco de Mayo weekend.

The undercard reads like a masterclass in Mexican boxing: Nayarit’s Armando “Toro” Reséndiz will defend his WBA Super Middleweight World Title against Tijuana’s Jaime Munguía, whose highlight reel of fan-friendly wars and knockouts makes him a natural replacement and instant crowd magnet.

Benavidez vs Zurdo cruiserweight world championship card undercard lineup

Parral’s Oscar Duarte faces Tijuana’s Angel Fierro in a ten-round super lightweight clash, pairing a technically precise contender with a brawler known for relentless aggression and highlight-reel power.

Rising super welterweight Isaac “Puro México” Lucero from La Paz meets undefeated Alan Sandoval of Nochistlan in his U.S. debut.

Lucero has built momentum with consecutive knockouts, while Sandoval combines power and tactical savvy, making this bout a potential breakout moment.

All four undercard fighters are Mexican, and each bout carries its own narrative, proving that this isn’t filler — it’s a statement of skill, ambition, and national pride.

Main Event Context

Headlining the night is undefeated two-division champion David Benavidez takes on unified cruiserweight titleholder Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.

Yet with Reséndiz vs. Munguía, Duarte vs. Fierro, and Lucero vs. Sandoval, the undercard has become a showcase of Mexican grit and next-generation talent, demonstrating that even in Charlo’s absence, Cinco de Mayo weekend will deliver drama, skill, and entertainment from top to bottom.
