The Chicago Sky will enter July, the third month of the 2025 WNBA season, with a 5-11 record. After Sunday’s 92 to 85 win against the Los Angeles Sparks, they jumped to 10th in the league standings and are now 3.0 games back from a playoff spot.

Second-year forward Angel Reese, who made the 2024 WNBA All-Star and All-Rookie teams last season, is pacing the team with averages of 12.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season.

In the midst of the team’s six-day-long break before facing the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, July 6, the WNBA made a major announcement about the future of the league.

On Monday, the WNBA announced expansion to 18 teams by the 2030 season. This includes the additions of a franchise in Cleveland, Ohio in 2028, Detroit, Michigan, in 2029 and Miami, Florida in 2030.

Chicago responded to this major announcement on Monday afternoon by posting two simple words on their social media.

“hey fam!!!🤭,” the Sky wrote.

The expansion that will include these three franchises is in addition to the Toronto Tempo and Portland WNBA team joining the league in 2026.

This season, the Golden State Valkyries became the league’s first expansion franchise since 2008. They are off to a 9-7 start in the 2025 season and sit at sixth in the WNBA standings.

Chicago founded its WNBA team in 2005 and began play during the 2006 season. They went 5-29 in their inaugural campaign and did not make the postseason until their eighth year of existence in 2013.
