Terence Crawford has made the decision to retain his title as champion in the super welterweight division of the World Boxing Association (WBA) and has chosen to vacate his welterweight belt. He communicated this decision formally to the organization.
In a letter sent by the American fighter, he made it clear that he intends to hold on to the 154-pound belt while giving up the 147-pound belt, which means that Lithuanian Eimantas Stanionis will now be the sole welterweight champion.
Crawford won the title last August 3rd by defeating Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles, at that time being a champion in two different weight classes. Now, he has decided to focus on the super welterweight division and continue his career in that category.
The WBA received Crawford’s communication and responded with a letter from Carlos Chavez, the director of the championships committee, expressing gratitude and recognition for his decision.
