MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women’s soccer team had several chances but it was Avery Sides who found the back of the net in the 30th minute of the first half and that was all the Lady Flames needed in a 1-0 Gulf South Conference road victory over Auburn Montgomery on the AUM Soccer Complex on Friday evening.
The victory kept Lee unbeaten in conference play, 2-0-1 and 2-2-3 overall. The host Warhawks dropped to 0-2 in league play and 2-3-1. Sunday’s scheduled match against Valdosta State has been postponed because of Hurricane Helene and will be rescheduled at a later date.
The Lady Flames took 14 shots in the win over AUM and placed seven on target. Grace Berry had two shots that were stopped by Warhawk keeper Karla Guzman-Ortiz. Isabella Valentine, Katie Wilson and Kassidy Kellett also had shots on goal. Guzman-Ortiz was credited with six saves.
On the other hand, Lee’s defense was in total control the entire evening, allowing AUM only one shot on goal and goalkeeper Abby Whitcomb was there to get the save.
Other stats saw the Lady Flames take seven shots in each half for a total of 14. They also received five corner kicks to none for the Warhawks. AUM was called for 13 fouls and Lee 11. Five yellow cards were given in the rugged battle.
Coach Lee Hughes’ thoughts:
“The team is very happy to get the win and stay unbeaten in conference! They aren’t satisfied though, they are hungry for more!”
“We had enough clear cut chances tonight to score more goals and that is the area we are going to get better at each day!”
