Drama in Barclays Scottish Women’s leagues with losses for both league leaders

Scottish Women’s Football’s national leagues have set up a dramatic last quarter of the season, with both league leaders losing on a dramatic day of fixtures.

Barclays Scottish Women’s Championship leaders Falkirk remain top of the table, but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bonnyrigg Rose, allowing second-placed Renfrew Ladies to close the gap to five points with a thrilling 5-3 home win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Ayr United had a brace from Rachel Scott to thank for a 3-2 win against Forfar Farmington, Stenhousemuir beat Dryburgh 3-1 at Ochilview and in the late kick-off Rossvale beat Morton 4-0.

Barclays Scottish Women’s League One has a new leader however, after Elgin City dethroned Dunipace in Denny 3-1 in front of a big travelling support, to go top of Scotland’s fourth tier for the first time.

St Mirren came from behind to rescue a point at home to Queen of the South, but a point each leaves both teams four points behind Elgin, albeit with a game in hand.

There was drama at the other end of the table too, with second-bottom Dunfermline Athletic winning their crucial game against bottom side Edinburgh Caledonia 3-0, lifting the Pars nine points ahead of their rivals in the relegation dogfight. Ahead of them, Westdyke also put vital points in the board, winning the northeast derby 3-1 against Inverurie Locos to keep them three points ahead of Dunfermline.
