CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Led by a 64.7% shooting effort from 3-point range, Illinois cruised to a commanding 92-60 win over Wisconsin at State Farm Center on Wednesday.
The Fighting Illini (17-8, 7-7 B1G) had six players score in double figures, led by Aaliyah Guyton, who had a career-high 22 points and six assists while going 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. Her 100% 3-point percentage is the best (min. 6 makes) in program history.Â
Cearah Parchment posted her second straight double-double with 12 points and a career-most 15 rebounds, while Maddie Webber tacked on 15 points off the bench.Â
Berry Wallace helped out with 13 points, Jasmine Brown-Hagger tallied 13 points, and Destiny Jackson amassed 10 points.
Illinois did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 24 assists on 36 made field goals while turning the ball over a season-low eight times. Individually, Jackson dished out the most for the Fighting Illini with six assists.
The Illinois defense held Wisconsin shooters to only 36.9% from the field, including 21.7% from three-point range.
How It Happened
After playing to a 9-9 tie early in the game, Illinois went on a 6-0 run with 5:17 left in the first quarter. Guyton connected on three 3-pointers in the opening period, helping the Illini take a 15-9 lead. The Fighting Illini then added two points to that lead by the end of the period. Closing the frame on a 5-0 run, Illinois established a 24-16 edge through the first 10 minutes of play.
After Wisconsin trimmed its deficit to five, Illinois began a 13-0 run starting at the 7:54 mark in the second period, highlighted by three made buckets from Webber, to increase its lead to 39-21. Ahead by as many as 18 in the opening 20 minutes, the Fighting Illini enjoyed a 42-26 advantage heading into halftime. Parchment reached the double-double mark within the opening three minutes of the frame, logging 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.
Illinois wasted no time building on its lead after the break, going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 48-26 with 7:40 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Fighting Illini added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 68-44 edge. Illinois played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 26 points in the paint.
Illinois kept widening that lead, expanding it to 81-50 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Webber’s three, to grow the lead to 90-50 with 3:43 to go in the contest. The Orange and Blue went up by as many as 41 late in the game en route to the win.
Illinois concludes its three-game homestand against Rutgers on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. CT.
