Belgium stunned England in the opening half hour of the UEFA Women’s Nations League match, the comeback not quite enough.
Beaten 5-0 on Friday, Belgium hit the Lionesses with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Tessa Wullaert latching onto a Jill Janssens ball over the top for a fourth-minute opener, then crossing for Justine Vanhaevermaet to head home.
It was 3-0 before the half-hour mark, Davina Philtjens low cross met by Wullaert for a tap in and her second of the night.
Philtjens was penalised for a foul on Beth Mead in the box, Mead getting up to convert clinically and get England back in it on 34 minutes.
After the break, Leah Williamson had a 25-yard strike tipped over by goalkeeper Lisa Lichtfus, Lucy Bronze was just wide with a header from a free kick.
Jess Park saw her deflected effort hit the top of the bar, Michelle Agyemang came off the bench with 10 minutes to go to immediately and outrageously volley home from Williamson’s long ball.
Although Belgium were pinned back for almost the entirety of the second half, Serena Wiegman’s side found they had left themselves too much of a task.
