Erik ten Hag has acknowledged the issues that were present when he took over as manager of Manchester United following Ralf Rangnick’s interim stint at the club.
Despite facing scrutiny earlier in the summer, INEOS decided to keep him on as the best candidate to lead the club forward.
Ten Hag has been transparent about the breakdown in communication with the owners but has since engaged in open discussions to address the challenges faced since he was informed he would remain as manager after the Ibiza summit.
In an interview with AD Sportwereld (via The Telegraph), the 54-year-old reflected on the culture he inherited at the club after a disappointing 2021/22 season.
He admitted to inheriting a negative culture and emphasized the need for significant changes to achieve top performance consistently.
“Rangnick was right. We’ve been working hard to address these issues over the past two years, but as he said, it’s a complex process.”
The former Ajax coach acknowledged the difficulties of the role and revealed that he was warned by several people, including former United manager Louis van Gaal, about the challenges ahead.
Ten Hag tempered expectations for the upcoming season, noting that the club is still a long way from competing for major titles.
While improvements have been made with Carabao Cup and FA Cup wins in recent seasons, Ten Hag stressed the need to continue raising standards and values within the club.
The new co-owners have taken a decisive approach to the transfer market and have made significant changes to the sporting department.
Despite the challenges, most United fans remain optimistic about Champions League qualification and competitive performances under Ten Hag’s leadership.
