Former Iowa women’s basketball star Kate Martin suffered a “bruised Achilles tendon” but should return to play this WNBA season, according to what her father Matt told KCCI.
The Las Vegas Aces rookie sensation suffered a painful-looking injury in the first quarter of her team’s game against the Chicago Sky on July 16, prompting her teammates to huddle around her in support before she limped off the court.
She did not return to play but did sit on the bench for the rest of the contest.
While there’s no good time to suffer an injury, the timing of this one isn’t as harsh as it could be. The Aces won’t resume play until Aug. 17 as players around the league prepare for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Another encouraging update came on July 20 as well.
An Instagram story showed Martin hanging out in a nightclub next to a sign that read, “Kate $$$ Martin in BOS” while giving a thumbs up.
While Martin’s role off the bench for Las Vegas has fluctuated throughout the season, she has been a favorite of both fans and her teammates since the beginning.
She is averaging 3.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 14.3 minutes on 35.1/39.6/100 shooting splits across 22 games with one start.
Martin was selected in the second round, 18th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft after six seasons at Iowa.
