As Lando Norris basks in the glory of becoming Formula 1 world champion for the first time, here’s a look at the new rules that will come into force for 2026
Everything you need to know about Formula 1’s major rule changes for the 2026 season
New Hybrid Power Unit: The power split between the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and electrical energy will shift to a near 50/50 balance. This is a major increase in electrical power, rising from 120kW to 350kW, making the energy recovery system significantly more influential than before.Introduction of 100% Sustainable Fuel: All power units will be required to run on a fully sustainable fuel that produces net zero emissions. This fuel is designed to be a “drop-in” replacement, meaning its technology is highly relevant for the broader automotive industry’s push towards sustainability.Smaller and Lighter Cars: The minimum weight of the cars will be reduced by 30kg and the maximum dimensions, including the wheelbase and width, will also shrink. These changes are intended to create a more “nimble” car concept, improving agility and the quality of wheel-to-wheel racing.Active Aerodynamics System: A new active aero system will replace the current Drag Reduction System (DRS), allowing both the front and rear wings to move. Drivers will be able to switch between a high-downforce Z-Mode for cornering and a low-drag X-Mode for increased straight-line speed and efficiency.New Overtaking Aid (Manual Override Mode): To encourage closer racing, a Manual Override system will replace the use of DRS for overtaking. This system grants a chasing car a temporary burst of extra electrical power for a limited time when within one second of the car ahead.READ MORE: Lewis Hamilton told how new F1 rules will impact him after Ferrari nightmareFollow Daily Mirror:
