Buddy McGirt believes that Michael Conlan will become a world champion and has indicated that he will be in the Irish star’s corner when he eventually wins a title.
Conlan, a two-time world title challenger, has been exploring different coaches since announcing earlier this year that he was not going to retire. While he has worked with Stephen Smith, Jorge Rubio, and Grant Smith, it seems that he has chosen the American, McGirt.
Although Team Conlan has not officially confirmed the news, McGirt, who has trained fighters like Matthew Macklin, Arturo Gatti, and Antonio Tarver, stated in an interview with Boxingscene that he will be coaching Ireland’s only male amateur World Champion.
The respected trainer is confident that he can help Conlan reach his full potential as a professional and secure a world title.
“He will be a world champion,” McGirt told BoxingScene.
Following three career defeats, including losses to Leigh Wood, Luis Alberto Lopez, and Jordan Gill, there were doubts about whether Conlan would make another world title run.
In a statement this Spring, Conlan affirmed his commitment to the world title dream. McGirt, who was in Dillian Whyte’s corner when he fought in Castlebar, believes that Conlan’s goal is achievable, noting that the former Top Rank fighter has more talent than he has shown in the professional ring so far.
“He has a lot of talent that people haven’t seen yet.
“There is nothing really to improve on because he is better than what he has shown.”
