Manchester United defensive duo Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire are taking steps to prepare for their coaching careers by obtaining their coaching badges.
The Daily Mail reports, “Jonny Evans, who excelled as man of the match against Aston Villa at 36 years old, is looking towards the future and following a United tradition of players getting their coaching badges at Carrington while at the club.”
“Evans, along with Harry Maguire, has enrolled to acquire his UEFA B qualification, which is now a requirement for pursuing a coaching and management career.”
The newspaper highlights that during his tenure as United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson encouraged his players to take coaching courses.
The Scottish manager advised his United players to use their afternoons productively by engaging in coaching courses.
With United currently facing defensive injury concerns, it seems likely that Evans’ role at the club will become more prominent in the upcoming matches.
Due to multiple senior players being unavailable for Saturday’s match against Brentford, there are talks of deploying Evans as a makeshift left-back.
Maguire, on the other hand, sustained an injury during the game against Aston Villa just before the international break. He started alongside Evans but had to be substituted at halftime.
The English defender took to social media to confirm that he will be sidelined for a few weeks while he recovers.
Both Maguire and Evans have contracts expiring in the summer of 2025. While it is expected that United will trigger the one-year extension clause in Maguire’s contract, a similar provision does not exist for Evans. If the club intends to keep him, they will need to offer him a new contract.
The match between United and Brentford will kick off on Saturday at 15:00 BST.
