After returning to the WNBA with an Olympic gold medal and a colorful nickname from A’ja Wilson, Kahleah Copper did not disappoint in her first game back with the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday.
The All-Star guard scored 29 points in an 85-65 victory over the Chicago Sky, kicking off the post-Olympic stretch of the WNBA season. Brittney Griner, another Olympian, added 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting along with nine rebounds and six assists.
It was a special night for Copper as she made her return to Wintrust Arena for the first time since being traded to Phoenix after seven seasons in Chicago. She was honored with a tribute video, recognizing her accomplishments that included winning the WNBA Finals MVP in 2021. She was also addressed by her chosen title of “MF Olympic gold medalist.”
Copper became a hero for Team USA just days before the game, scoring 12 crucial points in the fourth quarter of a 67-66 victory over France in the gold medal match. This victory not only secured the eighth consecutive women’s basketball gold for the Americans, but also tied Team USA with China for the most gold medals at 40. With more total medals, the U.S. claimed the top spot on the global medal standings.
With plenty to celebrate already, Copper looks ahead to the challenges in the coming weeks. The Mercury, with a record of 13-12 coming out of the break, are aiming to replicate their 10-game winning streak from the 2021 Olympic break.
Thursday’s game was a promising start, with another matchup against the Indiana Fever scheduled for Friday.
Lynx return with win over the Mystics
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx welcomed back head coach Cheryl Reeve and All-Star forward Napheesa Collier, both key members of Team USA.
Minnesota had to mount a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Washington Mystics, winning the final period 21-10 in a 79-68 victory. Collier had a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lynx now boast the best record in the Western Conference at 18-8, and will face the Mystics again on Saturday, this time on the road.
