The recent Liverpool game served as a clear reminder to Erik ten Hag that Casemiro is no longer the solution to Manchester United’s midfield struggles in big matches.
Manuel Ugarte was brought in from Paris Saint-Germain as a replacement for the Brazilian, but the Dutch manager has emphasized that the Uruguayan needs time to adjust to his new surroundings.
Ugarte impressed while playing for his national team over the weekend, and he is set to make his debut for United against Southampton in the upcoming week.
In terms of attacking options, the manager faces further limitations with Kobbie Mainoo being the preferred choice over Christian Eriksen, who struggles to cope with the speed of the English top-flight.
Lack of midfield options
An injury to the English midfielder could significantly impact the club’s season, and it appears that the 20-time English league champions have not adequately replaced Scott McTominay.
This has led to ongoing discussions about a potential move for free agent Adrien Rabiot, despite INEOS’ preference for signing players under 26 years old.
Rabiot is keen on playing in the Premier League and has ruled out moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, with Newcastle also showing interest.
However, according to Football Insider, a move for Rabiot seems unlikely at the moment due to the financial implications involved.
His wage demands are currently beyond what United can afford, which has hindered a potential transfer in the past as well.
Rabiot’s high demands
“Manchester United are finding a free transfer deal for Adrien Rabiot too costly, sources have informed Football Insider.
“Discussions are ongoing between United and the French midfielder following his departure from Juventus earlier this year. However, Rabiot’s demands are too expensive for Man United, who have been long-time admirers of his.”
Interestingly, United have previously attempted to sign Rabiot during Ten Hag’s tenure as manager, but it appears that securing his signature may prove difficult once again.
Rabiot’s versatility and winning mentality would be valuable additions to the squad, but unless his agent Veronique reduces her demands, Rabiot will need to continue his search for a new club.
