There is a lot of interest in veteran first baseman as a free agent. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees, Giants, Mariners, Nationals, and Mets are all engaged with him. Previous reports have covered connections to the Yankees, Giants, and Tigers.
Before the winter, the free agent market for first basemen offered various options with different earning potential based on age. Pete Alonso was the top first baseman in MLBTR’s ranking of the Top 50 Free Agents, expecting a five-year, $125MM deal at 30 years old. Christian Walker, entering his age-34 season, had a prediction of three years and $60MM. Goldschmidt, at 37, was expected to sign a $15MM one-year deal. Veterans like Justin Turner and Carlos Santana, not on the list, could still sign one-year deals.
Today, the Astros signed Walker to a three-year, $60MM deal as predicted. This creates a divide between high-priced options like Alonso and more affordable options. Alonso declined a qualifying offer, which comes with associated penalties based on the team’s financial situation.
Despite concerns about Alonso, some clubs may not be willing to make a big splash in free agency. Goldschmidt, a former MVP, is an attractive option for clubs looking to make a modest investment at first base.
In recent years, Goldschmidt’s performance has declined, but he finished strong in 2024. The Mariners, operating with budget constraints this offseason, could be interested in Goldschmidt to fulfill their need for a right-handed hitting veteran first baseman.
The Nationals, aiming to contend again, are looking to add middle-of-the-order bats, with first base a logical place for improvement. The Mets, with a potential first base opening, may not pursue Goldschmidt due to the presence of Alonso. President of baseball operations David Stearns of the Mets favors short-term deals, like the one-year contracts given to several free agents last season.
Replacing Alonso with Goldschmidt could mean Vientos staying at third base for another year, with the possibility of young infield prospects solidifying the team for the future.
