Mads Pedersen participated in the European Championships alongside Mathieu van der Poel and other riders in an attempt to break Italy and Belgium’s dominance on the race. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, leading to a sprint finish.
Pedersen and his Danish team were prominently featured in the Cyclingnews race report, making several attempts to shake things up. Even when a sprint finish seemed imminent, Kapser Asgreen and Søren Kragh Andersen made late solo attacks.
Despite a hectic sprint finish, Pedersen finished sixth, with Belgium’s Tim Merleir claiming the victory and the European Championship title.
Reflecting on the race, Pedersen expressed pride in the team’s performance, acknowledging the difficulty of outperforming elite sprinters in the peloton.
Pedersen’s aggressive riding style was evident as he joined van der Poel in various attacks during the race. Together with Danny van Poppel, Christophe Laporte, Jonas Rutsch, and Arthur Kluckers, they attempted to break away from the sprint teams.
Despite their best efforts, the breakaway was ultimately reeled in by Belgium and Italy, showcasing the strength of the sprint teams. Pedersen accepted the outcome, feeling satisfied with his sixth-place finish.
Looking ahead, Pedersen is set to compete in the Tour de Luxembourg as a final preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Zurich. With a challenging course that favors climbers, Pedersen remains a strong contender for the coveted rainbow jersey.
