We know Kansas City is interested in landing a WNBA team.
Now we know a potential owner.
The Kansas City Current’s owners could spearhead the effort. The women’s pro soccer team’s ownership group includes Brittany Mahomes and her husband, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, along with Angie and Chris Long.
ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter reported on X/Twitter that the ownership group has met with WNBA officials.
As WNBA expansion continues, ownership of the NWSL’s KC Current — which includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany — has met with the WNBA and is in contention to bring the league’s next franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes also co-owns the KC Royals and Sporting KC. pic.twitter.com/9kd2VXzWR3

The WNBA will expand by three cities, giving the league 15 teams, over the next two seasons. Golden State joins next season, with Portland and Toronto set to join the next season.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league would like to add a 16th team by 2028, and Kansas City is throwing its hat in the ring. KC is one of several cities that have expressed interest in an expansion team.
With a WNBA team, Mahomes would add to an ownership portfolio that — in addition to the NWSL’s Current — includes minority stakes in the Royals, Sporting KC and the Alpine Formula One team.
Mahomes also has said he’d have ownership interest in an NBA team in Kansas City.
