Head Radical

Aryna Sabalenka is not only dominating on the court as the world No. 1 and a three-time Grand Slam champion — she’s now leading the WTA on social media too. The Belarusian has officially become the most followed active WTA player on Instagram, overtaking Naomi Osaka in follower count. In an era where off-court influence is almost as important as on-court success, this marks a big milestone in Sabalenka’s rise as a global sports figure.

Sabalenka hits a new No. 1 and it’s exactly what sponsors love

While Grand Slam titles and rankings are the core of a tennis legacy, marketability increasingly shapes how athletes are perceived, endorsed, and remembered. A player’s charm, relatability, and social media presence now play a huge role in shaping public image — and Sabalenka ticks all the boxes.

As of now, Sabalenka boasts 2,812,600 Instagram followers, just edging past Osaka’s 2,811,916. This small but significant shift signals Sabalenka’s growing influence, particularly considering Osaka’s long-standing popularity and mainstream media presence.

Looking beyond Instagram, however, Osaka still retains an overall edge. When combining followings across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok, Osaka leads with nearly 5 million total followers, while Sabalenka is behind with approximately 3.9 million. Notably, Sabalenka is gaining momentum on TikTok, where she has 787.8K followers, compared to Osaka’s 465.4K.

Sabalenka’s growing popularity reflects a positive trend for the WTA. Tennis fans, and even casual observers, are starting to recognize her not just for her explosive game, but for her vibrant personality, engaging content, and relatable energy. While she’s not yet at the cultural level of icons like the Williams sisters or Maria Sharapova, she’s arguably the most visible and likeable active WTA No. 1 in years. The tour has been needing such a figure.

It’s also worth looking back. Just four years ago, in a social media ranking that included both active and retired players, Sabalenka barely made it to the honorable mentions. In March 2021, she had only 215.3K combined followers across Instagram, Facebook, and X. That leaderboard was dominated by Sania Mirza (32 million), Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki, and Venus Williams.

Sabalenka’s rise in the social media ranks mirrors her meteoric ascent in the sport, and the two seem to be fueling each other. With more titles, engaging content, and charisma to spare, her star is still very much on the rise.
