Atlético Madrid’s difficult season continued with a narrow 2-1 defeat against Sevilla on Liga F match-day 21.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid saw off 10-player Costa Adeje Tenerife, while Barcelona enjoyed a successful trip to Granada. The two powerhouses continue their winning streak in Liga F but Barca still hold a huge ten-point advantage over their derby rivals.

Here’s how the latest round of results unfolded in Spain’s top flight.

Sevilla edge out Atleti

Andrea Álvarez experienced mixed emotions in Sevilla’s 2-1 home win over Atlético Madrid. The Guatemala international opened the scoring from the penalty spot after the officials spotted a foul in the box. Álvarez then added a second with a stunning effort from outside the box, firing a right-foot shot past Lola Gallardo and into the top corner.

Trailing by two at the break, Atleti pulled a goal back within two minutes of the restart. Xènia Pérez’s diving header at the far post gave the visitors renewed hope. However, Sevilla ultimately stood firm to hold on to all three points, even though they finished the match with 10 players following Álvarez’s 93rd-minute red card for two bookable offences.

Real Madrid and Barcelona celebrate 2-0 wins

Costa Adeje Tenerife lost ground on third-placed Real Sociedad after they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Sunday. Tenerife’s Yerliane Moreno was sent off in the seventh minute following a dangerous tackle on Linda Caicedo. The Colombia international was forced off as a result of the challenge, making way for Spain international Alba Redondo.

As it proved, Redondo found the all-important breakthrough in the first minute of the second period. The striker neatly controlled Sara Holmgaard’s firm pass before she drove a low shot past Nayluisa Cáceres. Filippa Angeldal went on to double the home side’s advantage to make sure of the three points.

Barcelona continued their procession to the Liga F title with a 2-0 away win over Granada. The Blaugrana were awarded an early penalty after Caroline Graham Hansen was brought down in the box. The winger picked herself up to roll home her sixth league goal of the campaign. Barca went on to double their advantage through Aïcha Cámara. The defender held off her marker to steer the ball in from Graham Hansen’s corner. As it proved, Cámara’s first Barcelona goal wrapped up all three points before the clock had reached the 30-minute mark at Nuevo Los Cármenes.

Badalona prevail in five-goal thriller

Badalona established a two-goal lead in their thrilling clash with DUX Logroño. Lice Chamorro opened the scoring with her fifth league goal of the season. As the game moved past the hour mark, Estefanía Banini conjured up an unstoppable strike from distance to put Badalona in a commanding position.

Logroño’s Salomé Prat reduced the deficit, only for Irina Uribe to restore the visitors’ two-goal advantage. There was still time left for Ximena Velazco to net Logroño’s second goal of the game in the 10th minute of stoppage time. However, Velazco’s impressive control and finish counted for very little, as the hosts fell to their ninth home defeat of the Liga F season.

Disappointment for bottom two on Liga F match-day 21

Madrid CFF dismantled relegation-threatened Alhama in Saturday’s home clash. Allegra Poljak, Kamilla Melgård and Emilie Nautnes all scored inside the opening 15 minutes to effectively quash Alhama’s hopes of picking up a positive result. Melgård and Nautnes went on to complete their respective braces in the second period, helping end their team’s five-game winless run. As for Alhama, they remain a point adrift from safety after suffering a 13th consecutive defeat in Liga F.

Levante, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the table after they fell to a 2-1 loss in their home meeting with Deportivo La Coruña. The hosts took an early lead through Raiderlin Carrasco, who raced through on goal before steering the ball past Inês Pereira. Levante looked set to take a narrow lead into the break until Esperanza Pizarro produced a composed equaliser in the 40th minute. The Uruguay international brought down Paula Gutiérrez’s lofted pass and then calmly slotted the ball beyond Andrea Tarazona.

Marísa completed the turnaround just before the hour mark, tapping in from close range after Tarazona failed to gather a low free-kick into the box. Levante thought they had netted a late leveller, only for it to be chalked off for offside. As a result, they stay two points adrift of Logroño with nine matches left to play.

Two Basque giants clinch three points

Real Sociedad tightened their grip on top spot with a 2-1 win over Espanyol. Lucía Pardo proved to be the star of the show, netting a first half brace to put La Real in a commanding position at the break. Espanyol responded through Phoenetia Browne in the opening stages of the second period. However, the visitors ultimately experienced disappointment in their quest to find an equaliser. Having collected 47 points from 21 games, Real Sociedad are now 11 points clear of Tenerife and Sevilla in the battle for European qualification.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club left it late to beat fellow Basque side Eibar at the weekend. Daniela Agote netted a dramatic winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The substitute had the simple task of tapping in from Maite Valero’s squared pass to snatch all three points at Ipurua.

Did you know?

Logroño are still searching for their first home league win of the season. In fact, they have lost each of their previous seven Liga F matches on home turf.

Best goal of Liga F match-day 21

Badalona’s Banini and Sevilla’s Álvarez both produced impressive strikes from distance at the weekend. We have given the nod to Banini, who drove inside from the left flank and drilled a powerful shot out of the reach of Logroño shot-stopper Maria Miralles.
