The 2024/25 football season was a defining chapter in the career of Chloe Kelly. A season that started in personal disappointment and professional challenges at Manchester City evolved into a redemptive rise at Arsenal.

This culminated into one of the most memorable seasons of her career — winning one of the biggest trophies in women’s football.

A rocky start at Manchester City

For a player of Kelly’s calibre — known for her speed, technical ability, and that unforgettable winning goal in the Euro 2022 final — the start of last season was unexpected. Despite Kelly’s contributions in previous campaigns for Man City, she found herself firmly on the bench. She made one start in the opening six WSL games.

Kelly made just 12 appearances for Man City in all competitions over the first half of the season, most of which saw her come off the bench as a substitute. The lack of minutes took a toll on her mental health, she later described this period as a ‘dark place’.

In January, Chloe released a statement, after months of speculation about her situation, stating that she would not have a future at City when her contract expires in June. She made it clear she just wanted to be happy again. Her situation became a huge vocal point during the January transfer window.

A bold return to Arsenal

Amid interest from several Women’s Super League clubs — including Manchester United and Brighton — Kelly decided upon a bold move to Arsenal. This saw her return to her roots, the club where her football journey began.

Kelly slotted into Renée Slegers side with ease. Playing alongside the likes of Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Caitlin Foord, Kelly reignited her spark that made her one of England’s most exciting wingers. Her vision, creativity and work rate brought balance to Arsenal’s attack. She wasn’t just ticking boxes — she was becoming a difference-maker again.

Kelly featured regularly in league and cup matches, but it was in Europe where she truly shone. In Arsenal’s Champions League campaign, even contributing two assists in the home match against Real Madrid, she helped drive the team all the way to the final. Her composure on the ball, combined with her ability to pick out clever passes in the final third, made her a consistent threat.

On a memorable evening in May, Chloe Kelly completed the turnaround she had been working towards all season. Arsenal were crowned Champions League winners for the first time since 2007, after beating Barcelona 1-0. For Kelly, it was more than just a medal — it was the perfect response to the doubts and disappointments she had faced in the earlier months of the season.

Permanent deal confirmed

Following her standout loan spell, Chloe Kelly has now officially signed a permanent deal with Arsenal. A move welcomed by fans and teammates alike. Her decision to commit her future to the Gunners reflecrs the mutual belief between player and club. Arsenal have gained a proven winner and an experienced international. Meanwhile, Kelly has found a team that trusts her, values her and lets her play her best football.

With her future now secured, Kelly will head into the next season not just as a key player but as a symbol of Arsenal’s ambition. First, she will tackle the defence of England’s European title, with a stretch of challenging Euro 2025 ties lying ahead for the Lionesses.
