Surprising Kate Martin Revelation Stuns Caitlin Clark Fans After Valkyries-Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Indiana Fever took the floor earlier than usual on Wednesday, tipping off at 12 p.m. EST at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This marked the return of star point guard Caitlin Clark after a five-game absence.

Facing the Golden State Valkyries—who had defeated them just over two weeks ago—the Fever fell behind early in the first quarter and were ultimately dominated, losing 80-61. With the win, Golden State improved to 10-9 on the season, while Indiana dropped to 9-10.
Much of the pregame focus was on the matchup between former Iowa teammates Caitlin Clark and Valkyries two-way guard Kate Martin. However, following the game, a surprising statistic emerged: Martin, now in just her second WNBA season, holds an undefeated 6-0 record in head-to-head matchups against Clark.

“Hawkeye fans always knew Kate was the glue,” a fan said.
Another fan posted, “Kate is Caitlin’s mommy. Locked her down in both games this year.”
Someone else added, “this an auto bet going forward.”
One more fan commented, “We might have a hilarious basketball superstition on our hands.”

On Wednesday, Clark played under a slight minutes restriction, logging just 24 minutes. Despite that, she managed to contribute 10 points, five rebounds, and six assists, shooting 4-for-12 from the field, 2-for-5 from three-point range, and committing four turnovers.

Martin, primarily known as a defensive catalyst, did her job well—continuing to guard Clark effectively throughout their WNBA careers. She started and played 18 minutes, scoring five points and grabbing two rebounds on 2-for-7 shooting, including 1-for-4 from beyond the arc.
The two will face off again on Aug. 31 in Golden State.
