Mercedes has presented the first images of its 2026 Formula One car and completed the shakedown run with the W17, marking a major milestone as the sport prepares for its next regulatory era.
The British-German team says the reveal reflects years of coordinated work across its Brackley and Brixworth operations, with a clear emphasis on adapting early to the sweeping technical changes coming in 2026.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff underlined the scale of the challenge ahead, noting that “Formula One will undergo significant change in 2026, and we are prepared for that transition.”
He stressed that the new ruleset will require a comprehensive rethink of performance across the board, adding that “the new regulations demand innovation and absolute focus across every area of performance.”
According to Wolff, Mercedes’ development programme has been structured with that mindset from the outset. He highlighted the parallel workstreams on the chassis, Power Unit, and sustainable fuels, stating that “our work on the new car, and the long‑term development of the Power Unit and advanced sustainable fuels with PETRONAS, reflects that approach.”
The team chose to accompany the announcement with the first official images of the W17, a step Wolff described as a natural progression in the project’s timeline. “Releasing the first images of the W17 is simply the next step in that process,” he said.
The car, he added, embodies the combined effort of Mercedes’ two technical bases: “It represents the collective, sustained effort of our teams in Brixworth and Brackley.”
With months of development still ahead before the 2026 season begins, Wolff made clear that the team’s intensity will not diminish. “We will continue to push hard in the months ahead.”
The W17’s unveiling signals Mercedes’ intent to be fully prepared for the new era — one defined by revised aerodynamics, a radically different Power Unit formula, and the introduction of advanced sustainable fuels. The team’s early reveal suggests confidence in its direction and a desire to set the tone for the coming transition.
