Callum Walsh dominated gatekeeper Carlos Ocampo over 10 one-sided rounds at the Meta Apex Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada during the inaugural Zuffa boxing (Z01) event.
The two combatants came out throwing bombs in the first round, but extremely intermittently. Powerful combinations were thrown by each, followed by long periods of inactivity, then bombs again.
The fight settled into a pattern where a very confident Walsh, with his hands down, would pound Ocampo and then move and reset.
An odd moment came in the sixth when Walsh’s glove touch the canvas after a left hook from Ocampo hooked Walsh behind the right shoulder. In the ninth, Ocampo was deducted a point for a low blow.
The scoring was a formality as the judges had it 98-90 x 2 and 97-91 all for Walsh who improves to 16-0, 11 KOs. Ocampo slides to 38-4, 26 KOs. After the fight, Walsh admitted his hands, low approach was an invitation of former undefeated world champion Joe Calzaghe, rather than Roy Jones Jr.
In the co-main event, Mexican Olympian Misael Rodriguez showed what pedigree is all about when he stepped in the ring against the “Native Nightmare”- Austin Deanda, who had no amateur experience. Rodriguez did as he pleased, walking, Deanda down and landing a variety of well-placed hard shots. After the fourth round, Deanda complained of double vision. A short conference between referee Thomas Taylor and the ringside physician resulted in a stoppage between rounds, leading to Rodriguez raising his record to 16-0, KOs. Deanda loses his first at 17-1, 8 KOs.
In an all-action war, Julian “Hammer Hands” Rodriguez had to rely on ring movement and defense, as well as his punching power to overcome a relentless “Sugar” Cain Sandoval in a 10-round war. Rodriguez landed plenty of tremendous punches, but could barely dent the iron chinned Sandoval. For his part, Sandoval kept the pressure on but was simply outgunned throughout. The judges saw it fairly one-sided at 99-91 x 2 98-92 all for Rodriguez who moves to 25-1, 15 KOs. Sandoval drops his first at 17-1, 15 KOs.
