Starting basketball in 7th grade, Terrell quickly rose from a Division III school to a Division II program, where she faced setbacks but always bounced back. With intelligence, energy, and unwavering confidence, paired with her strong work ethic, the 6-foot-1 forward from Pennsylvania is poised for a bright future in the professional basketball world.
What led to your decision to move to Turkey and choose this team in particular?
The allure of Turkey as a favorable destination for women basketball players was a key factor for me. Upon exploring the overseas opportunities, Turkey stood out as an ideal option. After contacting various agents, one eventually took me on and handled the process of getting my profile out there. Their positive response and efforts made the choice clear for me.
Being from a Division II school, did you face challenges in securing a spot on the team?
Coming from Division II or III did present some obstacles, as many overseas teams tend to prefer players from Division I. However, I understood this bias and recognized the uphill battle. Nonetheless, I was determined to prove my worth and showcase my talents on a global platform.
This move will mark your first departure from Pennsylvania. How do you feel about leaving your family behind?
Leaving behind my family, primarily based in Reading, PA, will undoubtedly be a significant challenge. Despite the emotional aspect, I am prepared for this transition with faith in my abilities and the support of my loved ones. I trust in divine guidance to navigate this new chapter.
Do you have a plan in mind for your arrival in Turkey?
Accompanied by my father, our initial focus will be on acclimatizing to the new environment and exploring the surroundings. I aim to settle in comfortably and bring personal touches to my living space to create a sense of home away from home.
Your father played a pivotal role in introducing you to basketball. Can you shed light on his influence?
My father saw basketball as a positive outlet for me and encouraged me to pursue the sport. Despite starting late, I developed a deep passion for the game and received early praise for my dedication and hard work. His belief in my potential fuelled my journey to success.
Was your strong work ethic a natural trait, evident beyond basketball as well?
I inherently possess a tenacious work ethic across all facets of my life. The desire to excel and averse to settling for mediocrity, I strive to be the best version of myself. Starting basketball in 7th grade, I embraced the challenges with determination and relentless effort.
Transitioning to high school at Berks Catholic, how was your integration into the basketball team?
Joining the team at Berks Catholic after transferring from a public school, I encountered a welcoming environment. Despite the shift from a city setting to a more suburban atmosphere, I remained focused on my athletic pursuits. Winning championships and achieving personal milestones reinforced my commitment to the sport.
Securing a sports scholarship at Albright College, what led to your decision to major in business?
Initially a business major at Albright, I later switched to sports management upon realizing my passion for a career in sports. The transition reflected my evolving aspirations and aligned with my goal of becoming a coach in the future. The blend of business acumen and sports management appealed to me.
After excelling at Albright College, majoring in business, you switched to sports management at California University of Pennsylvania. What prompted this change?
The transition to sports management stemmed from a newfound clarity on my career direction. Identifying my passion for sports and aspirations to coach in the future, I tailored my academic pursuits accordingly. The shift allowed me to align my studies with my long-term goals within the sports industry.
Your decision to transfer from Albright College after a standout sophomore season, breaking records. What influenced this choice?
Seeking greater challenges and opportunities for growth, I opted to transfer from Albright College. The desire to test myself in a larger arena, away from my comfort zone in Reading, PA, motivated this decision. Breaking records and achieving milestones fueled my belief in pursuing higher-level competition.
Facing an injury after returning from a redshirt season, how did you navigate this setback?
Sustaining an ACL tear days before the season, I persevered through initial uncertainty and misdiagnoses to continue playing. Eventually learning the severity of the injury, I decided to undergo surgery post-season. The recovery process was challenging, but my commitment to hard work and dedication propelled me forward.
Reflecting on your recovery journey, how did you overcome doubts and setbacks?
Recovering from a serious injury like an ACL tear tested my resolve and mental strength. Faced with doubts and fears, I relied on my work ethic and dedication to push through the rehabilitation process. The unwavering belief in my ability to bounce back fueled my recovery.
Did the injury alter your playing style and perspective on the game?
The injury prompted a shift in my playing style, emphasizing finesse and agility over physicality. Adapting to a more strategic approach, I leveraged my skills and court awareness to maximize my impact on the game. By fine-tuning various aspects of my game, such as shooting and ball handling, I evolved as a player post-injury.
Contemplating a future in the WNBA, do you see yourself pursuing this avenue in your career?
While open to the possibility of playing in the WNBA, my current focus lies on excelling in the overseas circuit. Embracing the challenge and excitement of international competition, I aim to make a mark abroad before considering other avenues. Regardless of the path, my dedication and perseverance remain constant, driving me towards achieving my goals.
