‘We regroup and come back stronger’ – Sørensen comments on Everton’s defeat to Brighton

Everton manager Brian Sørensen was left frustrated after watching his side slip to a 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Walton Hall Park on Sunday afternoon.

Nikita Parris scored a last-minute winner for The Seagulls as they completed an impressive comeback. Everton had led twice in the game through Sara Holmgaard and Katja Snoeijs but they were unable to make their advantage count.

When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen felt that the late twist was very harsh on his side.

“I think we started really well and it’s a big blow to concede in the end,” Sørensen said. “
From where I’m sat and watching it back, I think it’s offside, but again, it’s not the ruling that they had, so it wasn’t to be today.

“They have very good players and at the end of the day, we were still missing some of our key players that I think would have been the difference today. I think the girls who played did excellent and did everything they could, so it’s a tough one, but we regroup and come back stronger.”

Australian international midfielder Clare Wheeler was again named Everton captain and Sørensen expressed his delight with her current form.

He said “I think she’s playing some of the best football at the minute. She’s doing really well and I’m excited for the future and what’s to come, she’s a good player for us.”

The Toffees now have just two games remaining, but they can’t relax just yet with their next game pairing them with local rivals Liverpool at Anfield. Sørensen said that his side are looking forward to derby day.

He said “It’s going to be a massive game. We have a good record there, especially in my time, so it’s one we’re going to look forward to. We’ll do everything to go there and get the three points.”

Everton’s next Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
