Several players around the league took some time away from their respective teams to represent their home country.
Former Golden State Valkyries guard Julie Vanloo participated in the EuroBasket games with Team Belgium. After helping Team Belgium earn a medal, she traveled back to Golden State to continue the 2025 WNBA season.
Despite her travels, Vanloo was released from the team. Upon arriving in Golden State, Vanloo was waived, a decision that fans have questioned.
While the timing of the release has been an issue for some fans on social media, given Vanloo’s long trip back to California, Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase recently shared her thoughts on the subject.

“From my perspective, I thought it was respectful because whenever a situation like that happens, you bring them in and as an adult you say thanks face to face,” Nakase said, per Kenzo Fukuda.
Julie Vanloo took to social media after she was released from the Golden State Valkyries. She mentioned that she was taken aback by the Valkyries’ decision, especially so sudden after her return to Golden State.
“After traveling 18 hours back to the Bay, I missed the fan ceremony and the chance to share that special medal moment with my family and friends,” Vanloo said. “I got back to San Fran as soon as I could. I left the party in the middle of the night after the game… To hear 1 hour upon arrival: we have to waive you. Honestly, that stung. I understand it’s business, but nothing prepares you for the loneliness that comes with getting cut. It feels like the whole world suddenly crashes on your shoulders.”

During her first season with the Golden State Valkyries, Julie Vanloo posted 4.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
Before playing for the Valkyries, Vanloo played her rookie season with the Washington Mystics.
