After making it to the playoffs for the first time in five years last season, the Indiana Fever are eager to capture their second-ever championship this year. With rising star Caitlin Clark entering her sophomore year, new head coach Stephanie White, and promising talents like Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull, the Fever have a prime opportunity during the WNBA free agency period to strengthen their team.
However, a key priority for the Fever is persuading Kelsey Mitchell, a vital part of the team, to stay. Although Mitchell is set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Fever have the option to designate her as a core player, a move they are expected to make.
Fever GM Amber Cox emphasized Mitchell’s importance, stating, “Kelsey Mitchell is our top priority heading into free agency. She is a cornerstone of this franchise and deserves to be part of the upcoming success.”
The core designation would grant the Fever exclusive negotiating rights in exchange for a one-year supermax salary, estimated at around $249,000 for the season. This move theoretically prevents Mitchell from engaging with other teams, but the Fever could still allow discussions or arrange a sign-and-trade deal.

According to IndyStar, Fever’s new president Kelly Krauskopf is confident that Mitchell will remain with the team. She highlighted Mitchell’s successful partnership with Caitlin Clark and believes that the duo is essential for the team’s success.

What has Mitchell said about her future?
Mitchell, currently playing overseas, has expressed openness to offers during free agency. She emphasized the need to prioritize her own interests in the decision-making process.
Reflecting on her ties to Indy, Mitchell stated, “Obviously, I’ve always had a home in Indy, so it could potentially be a home for me again.”
Mitchell’s strong chemistry with Clark was pivotal last season. Retaining her, along with strategic signings in free agency, could propel the Fever to a dominant position in the upcoming season.
